Inflation bites"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms;\">Last week\u00a0we reported that &#8220;Inflation is now a big social problem\u00a0for the village and so we are ordering and paying for exercise books, pens and pencils this week to avoid paying even higher prices in September&#8221;.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms;\">A friend in Cambodia writes<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>The high cost of food and fuel is on everyone&#8217;s mind. For the city people, this mean going for days each month with no money on their hand phone, and more carefully checking the weights in the market, but for many of the rural poor, this means having less to eat. The local TV news is crammed with pictures of concerned government officials handing out sacks of rice to &#8220;the poor&#8221;.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms;\">Also<\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, new york, times, serif;\"><strong>&#8230;the doubling of the price of food this year. Until recently when the government stopped it, neighbouring countries were buying up Cambodia&#8217;s harvest to meet their own shortfalls. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms;\">Well, we hoped that the price for the exercise books would hold but we weren&#8217;t expecting a price hike of around 40% !<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms;\">Yes, Mr Hon quickly alerted us to a price adjustment and that $400 was still needed to stock the school with exercise books for the coming school year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms;\">Quite amazingly, the email from Mr Hon was followed closely with an unexpected email advising that another $400 was available for us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms;\">Amazing it sure was &#8211; exactly the right amount needed!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms;\">Nevertheless we anticipate that this year&#8217;s assistance will<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms;\">be costing much more.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #0000ff; font-family: Bradley Hand ITC;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 13.5pt; color: blue;\">Martin and Margaret<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week\u00a0we reported that &#8220;Inflation is now a big social problem\u00a0for the village and so we are ordering and paying for exercise books, pens and pencils this week to avoid paying even higher prices in September&#8221;.
