Day 4 – Visits to village schools

Today we visited 3 village schools more than 10 km distant from Siem Reap.

The schools were founded by Chheang Phalla, a monk and teacher at Wat Preah Dak in the Angkor Wat Archaeological Park area.

The schools have been established in villages more than 10 kilometers north-east of Siem Reap: Preah Dak, Tatrey, Ouotoeng, Than, Tany, Khmar Sonday, Salakrovann and Runteak .

They are supported by the Cambodia Child and Hope Association (CCAHA).

Since we have established our own English classes at Khvien, we were interested to see how these other schools operate and their teaching methods of teaching English to impoverished village children.

They also teach phonetically which also is of great interest to us.

The three schools we visited were firstly at the pagoda at Preah Dak, where Margaret eagerly participated in teaching and then the smaller schools at other villages, termed Branch 2 and Branch 4.

We were amazed at their teaching results! In one class taught by our friend Kourosh (see other posts concerning KILT) Khmer children with just 3 months class tuition were reading English fluently! Of course, much is yet to be done in developing their comprehension, but to see these very poor children eagerly participating in the classes was inspiring to us.

See pictures of our visits in the Photo Album “April 2010 Visit”.
