News from Khvien for the new school year

Much has been going on at the school as plans we made came into being last week for the new school year.

The school has had its new library building officially opened in July – previously Mr Hon had allowed us to equip a classroom as a library and so it had its first books and two bookcases – now though a properly resourced library is possible and, as you can see from the pictures, it’s come a long way since its days in a leaking thatched hut!

Last week, two bookcases were constructed to match the existing ones. These are made to a design that Margaret and I have provided and we get them constructed in nearby Siem Reap. Now the library has 4 sparkling bookcases! Each one is on wheels and that allows teachers to take them to other classrooms for classroom teaching.

30 sky blue plastic chairs were purchased last week (now that’s a change from the old wooden benches!) and placed in the library so that classes may be held there.

Then, the “piece de resiustance” is the new whiteboard. No longer do they have to use a scratchy blackboard (well, it was actually a ‘blue’ board!).

When you look through the pictures, it may be hard to imagine that this is a poor, sometimes starving, village school. Yet now they have beautiful uniforms, magnificent new facilities, and a growing pride in being students at Khvein village school.
